Liberal Democrats select Paul Varnsverry as Prospective Parliamentary Candidate11.00.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 29th Sep 2008
Paul Varnsverry has been selected by Liberal Democrat members in Northampton South Parliamentary constituency as their Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, after fighting off strong challenges from previous holder of the position, Kevin Barron, and fellow Councillors Jenny Conroy and Portia Wilson. Paul, who stood for election to the Borough Council in May 2007, after campaigning to have bunds removed from Delapre Park, has fought to retain Gloucester Avenue Post Office, the only branch in Northampton threatened with closure to be saved, and championed greater community engagement and empowerment of the public in making decisions on issues that affect them. He is deputy chair of Northampton Borough Council's planning committee and chairs the neighbourhood management board for Delapre, Far Cotton, Briar Hill and Camp Hill. Speaking immediately after his selection, Paul said: "I am delighted and feel privileged to have been selected as the Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Northampton South. "I would also like to thank Jenny Conroy, Portia Wilson and Kevin Barron for the congenial manner in which they conducted their individual campaigns, and offer my commiserations to them. "I will continue to champion the interests of the residents of Northampton and show them that the tremendous improvements which Northampton is seeing, following the Liberal Democrats taking over control at the Guildhall, will be further enhanced should they choose to elect me as their next MP."
