Glass collection trial begins11.11.00am GMT Thu 7th Feb 2008
Liberal Democrats have taken a step towards honouring a manifesto commitment this week by introducing a weekly glass recycling trial in areas of Hunsbury, St James and Duston. Residents of 4,000 properties will be able to put out their glass bottles and glass jars at the kerbside for collection today and Friday as the new glass-recycling pilot gets underway. The new black boxes have been delivered to all the households taking part and leaflets asking people to put out their glass jars and bottles for collection have been posted through letterboxes. Northampton Borough Councillor Trini Crake, cabinet member for environment said: "We are really excited about the introduction of the town's first kerbside glass recycling scheme. This is something we promised to introduce in our manifesto and something that residents have been telling us they want. "The recycling rates in the town are already very good and this can only make them better. The residents in the pilot areas are a mixture of keen recyclers and not so keen recyclers so this will give us a good indication of the overall demand for the scheme in the rest of the town. "This is a long-term project and we will be monitoring the success of the initial trial closely. If the demand for the scheme is there we will look into rolling it out further across the borough." The very first kerbside glass collections will start on Thursday 7 and Friday 8 February and will be collected on the same day as the household's other recycling. The collections will take place weekly to ensure boxes don't become too heavy for residents to comfortably move them. The glass collection is also being incorporated into the other recycling collections so no extra vehicle is required and no extra journeys need to be made. Residents involved in the scheme can contact the recycling team on 01604 838281 if they have any further questions.
