Cllr Brendan Glynane is encouraging young people to try out new sports in the Market Square over half-term

Young people will have the chance to get active in the Market Square this half-term with top sports coaching and energetic video games are just two of the attractions on offer.

Northampton Borough Council's sports development team have come up with an exciting package of free events for aspiring Wayne Rooneys, Tony Hawkes' and Monty Panesars to test their skills and learn new tricks.

The action starts on Wednesday 24 October with a mobile skate park and NEOS Electronic Gaming platform. Young people are invited to bring along their skateboards or rollerblades and test their reflexes against an electronic gaming machine. Both the skate park and NEOS will be free to use from 11am to 3pm.

On Friday 26 October from 11am to 3pm there will be a chance to join a football, cricket or martial arts training session. Friendly coaches from the borough council, county council and Northamptonshire County Cricket Club will be on hand to give help and advice regardless of ability. BBC Radio Northampton will also be there with their virtual gym. For cyber athletes virtual tennis, golf and other sports will be available on a Nintendo Wii.

Councillor Brendan Glynane, portfolio holder with responsibility for sports development said:

"Young people need opportunities like this to gather, interact and socialise. Come along to the Market Square this half-term and get active, even the video games will make you get up and moving.

"With a huge range of sports and games on offer this is a chance to improve your skills or try something new."

All of the activities will be free. If you would like more information about what is happening at the market then call 01604 635257.
