Lib Dems support Local Democracy Week4.59.05pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 11th Oct 2007
Hordes of young people are expected to take part in a lively speed dating style event in Northampton on Saturday 13th October as part of a programme of events to kick-start Local Democracy Week. The week long national campaign to connect young people with their local councils officially begins on Monday 15th October. Highlights of Northampton Borough Council's activities include the chance for young people to grill councillors and other community representatives at a speed dating style event, take part in workshops to have a say on local services and meet members of the Pensioners' Forum to talk about the things that matter to them. The Leader of Northampton Borough Council councillor Tony Woods said: "Research shows that most young people don't see local politics as a major part of their lives. The same research shows that by bringing young people and politicians closer together we can change this. "Our Youth Forum meetings are already well supported, but we hope these extra events during Local Democracy Week will get more young people involved." Events are free and everyone is welcome.
