Northampton first for Anne Frank Awards3.09.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 1st Oct 2007 The search is now on for people in Northampton who are shining examples to us all. Respect, integrity, honesty, fairness, moral courage, determination, responsibility and social justice are just some of the values recognised by the Anne Frank Award scheme, which is being launched in Northampton. "It only takes a moment to start to improve the world" were the inspirational words of Anne Frank. The awards are to recognise those who share the spirit that Anne Frank demonstrated and the values she believed in. Northampton has been chosen to stage the awards by the Anne Frank Trust because of the work it has already done to raise awareness of the Holocaust and tackle hate crime. Members of the town's Youth Forum will be acting as ambassadors for the trust and over the coming months will be looking for people, young and old, who are making special contributions to the community.
Speaking about the awards Leader of Northampton Borough Council councillor Tony Woods said: "Do you know someone who has done something special. Perhaps someone who has done something to tackle bullying, help young people in distress, who has spoken up to help people in the community, maybe someone who has stopped a crime or someone who has helped to tackle hate crime and discrimination. If you do, then nominate them." Anyone can nominate, either an individual or group. The closing date for nominations is 10 March 2008. The winners will be invited to take part in Northampton's 2008 Holocaust memorial events and be VIP guests at next year's carnival celebrations in June where they will be given their awards. Nominees may also be put forward to the national Anne Frank Awards held in June, around the time of Anne Frank's birthday. For on-line nomination forms visit www.northampton.gov.uk/annefrank or telephone Northampton 837566.
