Council Failing Excluded Pupils

12.01.00am GMT Wed 21st Mar 2007

Councillor John Yates

Cllr. John Yates

Hidden away in a report to the Stronger Communities Scrutiny Committee is a very short reference to pupils who are excluded from schools due to their disruptive behaviour. The report states: "The Authority has a statutory duty to provide 21 hours education within 6 days of exclusion; this is currently not being met and stands at 16 days"

Cllr. John Yates, Lib Dem spokesman for Young Peoples Services on the County Council says: "This is a disgrace, it is just not good enough. At the Council Meeting on Thursday I will be asking the responsible Cabinet Member, Cllr. Joan Kirkbride: what measures she intends to take to make sure that the County Council provides the education that it is legally obliged to excluded pupils?"
