Lib Dems take Crime Campaign to the Streets of Northampton10.00.00am GMT Sat 17th Mar 2007
Northampton Liberal Democrats have stepped up their 'We Can Cut Crime' campaign by running a street stall and petition in Northampton's Abington Street on Saturday. "We are bringing the "We can cut crime" campaign to Northampton town centre because we believe we need effective action in our area to tackle crime and our 5 point plan offers a practical alternative to the spin put out by other parties" said Andrew Simpson, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Northampton North constituency. The Lib Dems 5 point plan includes 1) More police on patrol - don't waste billions on ID Cards - stop the cut of 11 police officers in Northamptonshire 2) Take back our Town Centre - give the Council and local community greater power to shut troublesome pubs and clubs 3) Make sentences mean what they say - Life should mean life 4) Compulsory work and training in prison - to cut re-offending 5) More compensation for victims - paid for by prison work "Local people are fed up of living in fear of crime. We want to take effective steps to tackle crime by putting more police on patrol and taking action to take back our town centre, making it safer for local families. "Unlike the Conservatives and Labour who offer meaningless 'tough-talk' sound-bites, the Liberal Democrats are proposing effective action to tackle crime. "Most people simply do not believe Labour Ministers spinning their latest sound-bite on crime. After ten years of a Labour Government, it is clear that Labour haven't managed to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour "We need effective action to tackle crime. The Liberal Democrats offer five simple solutions. Northampton people can read more about our campaign at www.wecancutcrime.com"
