The Delapre Bund will be removed say Lib Dems

8.41.45am GMT Tue 6th Mar 2007

Following Monday night's Northampton Borough Council Cabinet meeting where the Tory administration dithered about what to do with the Delapre Park Bund the leader of the Council's Liberal Democrat Group sent the following statement to Paul Vansverry, member of the Delapre Park Action Group. "I am convinced the London Road bund has to be removed to restore the beauty of Delapre Park. If we (the Liberal Democrats) are the administration after May's local elections we will remove it as quickly as possible having regard to finding a sensible economic solution. Adding drainage will throw good money after bad. It will be better to return the park to its former glory."

Paul Vansverry later read the statement to a meeting of the Far Cotton Residents Association to general acclaim.

Speaking later, Cllr Woods said, "The current flooding of the park shows that the bunding has upset the natural drainage of the park. It will cost money to correct this - money that would be better spent removing the cause of the problem - the bund itself. I appreciate the consultation showed people accepting the bund should stay, but that was on the basis of very high cost estimates and a flawed consultation seemingly aimed at getting one particular answer - to keep the bund.

"The Tories are dithering as usual. I am saying very clearly that a Lib Dem administration will remove the London Road bund in as economical way as possible."

Paul Vansverry was delighted by the clear commitment that the bund will go. He said, "At last, someone has said unequivocally that the bund must go. I am delighted."

Local ward Councillor, Brendan Glynane (Lib Dem, Delapre) said, "If we work with partners I believe the bund can be removed at very little cost to the Council. Tony Woods has provide a clear lead where others have waffled."
