Sally, who speaks for the Lib Dems on Public Protection issues says: "The Home Fire Safety Checks have been an outstanding success, and it is good to hear that this has played a significant role in ensuring that between April 2005 and March 2006 there were no house fires that resulted in a fatality"

"Liberal Democrats have always supported preventative measures like this, and we must ensure that when budgets are discussed, that these successful initiatives do not get cut."

In the year ending March 2006 the Fire and Rescue Service had made over 4,500 safety visits and had prioritised these on a basis of those at greatest risk, the elderly, the young, ethnic minorities, socially deprived families, alcohol and drug users and those less able.
