Roger Conroy, who spectacularly won the Borough Council by-election in the Spencer Ward on 9 February won the warm applause of over 500 Liberal Democrats attending the Midlands Leadership Hustings in Coventry on Saturday (18/2/06).

Roger Conroy was introduced at the start of the meeting as Liberal Democrats from across the Midlands celebrated Roger's success and gaining the parliamentary seat in the Dunfermline by-election on the same day. Cllr Conroy said "it is a great boost to get such a warm reception from so many colleagues, many of them Councillors with many years experience".

The hustings allowed Liberal Democrat members in the Midlands to hear first hand from the three leadership contenders - Ming Campbell, Chris Huhne and Simon Hughes - and to question them on their goals for the party should they be elected leader.

The result of the leadership election will be declared at the beginning of March.
