Tories cause Roadmender to close

Roadmender trustees have announced that the Roadmender is to close immediately. They have said 'The future of Roadmender was called into question by Northamptonshire County Council's recent decision to withdraw funding. At the time the Northamptonshire County Council were making their decision we advised them that, without their commitment to invest in 2006/07, to make such a decision would jeopardise the future of the Charity.'

Sadly, Tory County councillors have ignored this advice, and the centre is now closed.

Liberal Democrat councillors are leading the campaign to keep Roadmender open. We have won the backing of Northampton Borough Council to continued support for Roadmender, and we are proposing to the next county council that they reconsider the withdrawal of funding.

'Tory Leaders said that they did not want to see Roadmender close' said Lib Dem County Group Leader Richard Church. 'Now they see the consequence of their actions I hope, at the eleventh hour, they think again. We need to see a future for youth entertainment in our town centre which is about more than booze first, booze last and nothing in between.'
