9.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 19th May 2005

Northampton Liberal Democrat Borough Councillor Sally Beardsworth has been elected Mayor of Northampton at a ceremony held today at Northampton's Guildhall. She becomes the first ever woman Liberal Mayor of the town and only the 11th woman to be Mayor in the town's history. It is also only the second time the Liberal Democrats/Liberal party has had a Mayor of the Borough since 1951.

"I'm looking forward serving the people of our town as its Mayor" said Sally. "I am deeply honoured to be serving the town in this way and for the support of my family and friends in doing so".

Sally is joined by her husband Mike who becomes the Mayor's Consort for the coming year. Sally was proposed for the position by Lib Dem Councillor Richard Church and seconded by colleague Councillor Andrew Simpson.
