Northampton Lib Dems head for Blackpool after poll success

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 16th Sep 2005

Northampton Liberal Democrat councillors and campaigners will be heading to the party's annual Conference in Blackpool this weekend buoyed by winning 7 County Council seats in the May election as well as achieving one of the best results ever for the party in Northampton North.

"It will be a week of celebrating our success but more importantly planning for the future" said Andrew Simpson parliamentary candidate at the General Election for Northampton North. "The results in May put us firmly on the road to taking power in the Borough Council elections in May 2007 as well as being the main challengers to Labour in Northampton North at the next General Election".

Whilst there will be no new policy papers at the conference there will be no less than 16 policy motions being debated updating existing party policy on Europe, plans for the post office network and school discipline to name but three.

Northampton local party will be sending one of its largest delegations to the Conference with no less than 10 members expected to attend during the week.

In a break from the traditional style of party conferences there will be a number of question and answer sessions including one with Charles Kennedy MP, Lib Dem Leader on Monday afternoon. The conference ends on Thursday with Charles Kennedy's speech.
